Oprah tops power 100 list

Oprah tops power 100 list

Oprah Winfrey has been named the most powerful woman in entertainment according to The Hollywood Reporter’s 17th annual Women in Entertainment Power 100 list.

The Power 100 List basically honors the top 100 women in the television and motion picture industries.

It is not a surprise that Winfrey topped the list.

"The decision to place Oprah at the top of the list was based on her dizzying array of Oprah-branded media and her immense cultural influence. Today's most powerful woman in entertainment might just be the most influential woman in America" said the editor of The Hollywood Reporter.

Winfrey was number six on the list last year.

Also on the list: Angelina Jolie at 24, Tyra Banks at 36, Tina Fey at 51, Shonda Rhimes at 56, and Rachael Ray at 65.

Gary Coleman's charges dropped

Gary Coleman's charges dropped

Gary Coleman lucked out on Tuesday when California court ruled that all criminal charges that were pinned on him after his ‘incident’ will be dropped in nine months if he doesn’t get into any more trouble.

Back in September, Coleman allegedly ran over a fan outside of a Utah bowling alley.

Coleman pleaded no contest to his charges of reckless driving and disorderly conduct.  By doing this he was granted a plea in abeyance.

The fan is now seeking damages from the run in and is filling a personal injury lawsuit against Coleman.

The lawyer representing the victim said, "We're involved in fact discovery right now. Right now we are doing written questions and next will be Mr. Coleman's deposition. It will be the first time that we will have an opportunity to take his statement and get his version of the events as they transpired."

2008: Death on "Black Friday"

2008: Death on "Black Friday"

This years “Black Friday” added a whole new meaning to black when a Wal-Mart employee was trampled to death by early morning shoppers in New York.

At around 4:55 am on Friday a crowd of more than 2,000 shoppers forced their way into the Valley Stream, NY store.

There were only around six workers, and they were obviously unable to hold the crowd back.

Witnesses said the doors flew open, and the mob rushed the store.  Jdimytai Damour was then thrown back and the crowd literally trampled him to death.

New York police say that shoppers who ran over the victim could face criminal charges.

“I’ve heard other people call this an accident, but it is not. Certainly it was a foreseeable act,” said the New York detective.

Mother accused of the cause of teen's suicide

Mother accused of the cause of teen's suicide

A Missouri women was convicted Wednesday of three misdemeanor charges after being accused of participating in a MySpace hoax that ended in a young teenagers suicide.

The L.A. jury rejected more serious felonies to this woman.

Lori Drew, 49, allegedly posed as a 16-year-old boy named Josh Evans on MySpace and contributed in “an elaborate scheme to inflict massive humiliation” on the emotionally fragile teenager that ended when she hanged herself.

Drew faces up to three years in prison after the federal jury did not convict her on three felony charges. The felony counts had carried a maximum 20-year term.

This has been called the nation’s first cyber-bulling trial. Drew was officially accused of hatching the MySpace romance plan in 2006 because of a feud between Drew’s daughter and the teen. The fictional “Josh” concluded the online flirting by sending a message saying “the world would be better off without Meier(the teen).”

Meier then hung herself in a closet with a belt and died the next day.

September arrest puts Heather Locklear with DUI charges

Heather Locklear was arrested in September on suspicion of DUI, and now has been formally charged with driving under the influence of drugs according to the Santa Barbara, California District Attorney’s Office.

Although she was under the influence of drugs, they were not illegal drugs.  They were “prescription medications” and if Locklear is convicted she can face up to six months in county jail.

"Lab tests showed she had no alcohol in her system and no illegal narcotics of any kind," says Senior Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter.

Carter did not comment on what kind or amount of medications were in Locklear’s system.

Luckily, Locklear can only be charged with a misdemeanor because DUI without injuries are not considered a felony.

Lindsay Lohan has come quite a long way since her in and out visits to rehab last year.  The now grounded actress has regained control of herself and is how happy with her life.

ABC’s Greys Anatomy is taking a shocking turn as they cut one of the two gay characters out of the show.

Disappointingly enough, Smith’s character isn’t even given any closure with Dr. Torres.  Apparently, she just walks to her car and is never seen again.

"Those who work on the ABC series [say] that the gay-themed storylines and gay characters are being downplayed and even erased from upcoming scripts,” according to ABC.

The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, had nothing to do with the decision.  The executives at ABC made the final decision.

Voting for president never tasted so good

Corporations are rewarding Americans for voting in this historical election.

Krispie Kreme, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Starbucks, and Chick-fil-a are all giving out free items to those who vote.

Ben & Jerry’s wanted to not only satisfy people who voted, but also children who were under 18 that were unable to vote.

"Originally, we planned to give free scoops away just to those who voted. We found out afterwards that certain laws may not allow it. So instead we're celebrating our election with a national party," a rep for Ben & Jerry's said.

Giving out free donuts, coffee, ice cream, and chicken is an incentive for people to go out and vote.

Jennifer Hudson's nephew murdered

Oscar award winning actress, Jennifer Hudson, has received devastating news about her family over the past couple of days.

Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, died of multiple gunshot wounds.  His death has been ruled a homicide.  Just three days earlier, Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, and brother, Jason Hudson were found fatally shot in their home.

King had been missing since the killings, and was found dead in the back of an abandoned SUV in Chacigo.

"We're not releasing anything else," said ME spokesman Sean Howard. "We possibly have a criminal out there and we have to maintain discretion."

There are no suspects released yet, but police has declared King’s stepfather, William Balfour, as a “person of interest”.   Police are now investigating all three murders as one case.

"Our investigation continues. He is still considered a person of interest in the investigation," Monique Bond, spokesman for the Chicago Police Department said.

Palin finally speaks about her $150K wardrobe

Palin finally speaks about her $150K wardrobe

After news broke out last week saying the McCain campaign spend $150,000 on Sarah Palin's wardrobe, she has been hesitant to talk about it.

If Palin won't talk about it, someone will.  Elisabeth Hasselbeck, a host on The View, brought it up when she was introducing Palin at a rally in the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimee, Flordia.

Hasselbeck said, "Instead of the issues, they are focused, fixated, on her wardrobe. Now, with everything going on in the world it seems a bit odd. But let me tell you, this is deliberately sexist."

People are confused as to how this is sexist.  The issue at hand is that the McCain campaign is wasting donations on unnecessary things.

Since Hasselbeck did bring up it, Palin obviously felt obligated to speak about it.

"This whole thing with the wardrobe, you know I have tried to just ignore it because it is so ridiculous, but I am glad now that Elisabeth brought it up, cause it gives me an opportunity without the filter of the media to get to tell you the whole clothes thing," Palin said. ""Those clothes, they are not my property. Just like the lighting and the staging and everything else that the RNC purchased, I'm not taking them with me. I am back to wearing my own clothes from my favorite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska."

Some TV executives are stoked about Palin wanting a career on television.

But not everyone is so excited about Palin’s new idea.

"I would not put her on the air. I find her a little stiff, and her ability to read the room is not quite fully developed."

Clinton & Obama

The fact that either Hillary Clinton, a white woman, or Barack Obama, a black man will be the Democratic nominee for president is stirring up a national debate about how sexism and racism may profile the campaign.

A tea party with members of Columbus, Ohio’s Junior League a question posed:  Is blatant sexism more acceptable than blatant racism?

“Sexism of the nature Hillary Clinton is experiencing has been around as kind of an acceptable joke for years.  As far as racism, it’s definitely not politically correct or acceptable,” voter Babette Feibel told us.

Hillary Clinton has had to deal with plenty of sexist remarks.  At a rally, people yelled at her and told her to “iron their shirts.”  Radio host Rush Limbaugh told listeners, “Will this country want to actually watch a woman get older before their eyes on a daily basis?”

Which is more tabboo: racism or sexism?

Which is more tabboo: Racism or Sexism?

Sexism and racism have been rising between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. These expressions have been obvious, yet subtle, and sometimes imagined. These two politicians are revamping the national debate over what is and is not okay to say in public.

Clinton’s camp has seen sexism in comments about her appearance and emotions. Obama’s supporters have complained about racial implications in remarks about his Muslim-like middle name, Hussein, and his drug use as a young man.

Between the two democratic nominees being a white woman and a black man, this situation has created uproar of the nations sensitivity – or lack thereof – to certain kinds of comments. Is it more acceptable, for instance, to make a sexist remark than a racist remark?

"It's always been easier," says Marie Wilson, president of the White House Project, which encourages women's advancement in politics. "With women, you can get away with it."

Michelle speaks highly of Barack

Michelle Obama called her husband’s running mate, Joe Biden, “one of the smartest men in Washington,” just hours before the vice-presidential debate.

“[Biden is] the kind of guy you want to have a beer with,” she told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show Thursday.  “I hope that part of his personality comes through.”

As for her own man, Michelle talked about her husband’s eternal energy and promise – and also about the couple’s relationship.

Seacrest asked how she and Barack met,  Michelle said he merely told her, “We should go out.  He had no special lines.  Barack’s not some line-giver.”

White House or Black House?

The Republican Party of Texas will donate $1,500 to charity.  It received the money from leasing a booth at its state convention to a vendor who sold racist buttons, according to reports.

The booth selling the racist pin was leased by Jonathan Alcox of Florida according to the Dallas Morning News.

Texas Republican’s spokesperson, Hans Klinger, said the Republicans have been unsuccessful in trying to reach the vendor, Republicanmarket.com, who sold pins, scarves, and other items last weekend.

So, instead, the part is sending a letter saying that he isn’t allowed to sell any items at any further state GOP events.

The Republican Party has not decided which charity will receive its donation.

Klinger went on to say that he and Republican leaders believe the pin is distasteful and they hated that it was being sold at their event, which he said was upbeat and dedicated to unity.

Sexism and Hillary Clinton

Sexism and Hillary Clinton

What kind of American leader would stand silent, supporting with sexist comments, attack with anti-feminist comments on a respectful women of the same party, but a national Democratic leader?

Barack Obama.

Obama’s breakthrough says something good about the state of racial politics in our nation or the lack of racial politics and also the involvement of young people in politics.  But in his silence in the case of the media ridiculing Hillary Clinton by a national press corps obsessed with her gender is telling.

And unless Barack Obama speaks, his campaign’s acceptance of the gender bias moved by our national media will remind many of Ronald Meagan’s acceptance of the race-baiting southern stragety because if Obama accepts the presidenct, because of utter sexism, a vicious gender attack on a female rival – the most famous female Democrat in history – he will set feminism in our country back a generation.

There is no hope for John Edwards.  His cruel reaction to the news that Hillary Clinton got a bit emotional during a New Hampshire diner visit was a window into an empty room.

Ole Miss overcomes racial past

The University of Mississippi is holding the first debate of the presidential campaign this Friday.  The millions of viewers will see one thing: Ole Miss has changed.

The university’s chancellor, Robert Khayat, a former Ole Miss football star, sees the debate as an extraordinary opportunity to remember in 1962, when white students rioted, leaving two dead, in protest against the enrollment of the university’s first black student, James Meredith.

"For many people, 1962 is locked in their memory, as far as Ole Miss is concerned," Khayat said. "Now, 46 years later, we're hosting the presidential debate and one of the candidates is an African-American. That, I think, speaks volumes about where we were and where we are."

Since Khayat was a appointed chancellor 13 years ago black enrollment has increased to 14 percent, from 5.8 percent in 1995. (Mississippi is nearly 40 percent black)

The Confederate flag is no longer everywhere at football games.  In 2006, Civil War memorials on campus were joined by a monument to Meredith and integration.

Barack Obama’s support from Hillary Clinton supporters to still where it was in June. A poll showed Tuesday that his lack of progress is weakening his support from the Democratic Party.

An Associated Press-Yahoo News poll shows that the adults who supported Hillary during the primaries, 58 percent now support Obama. That is the same percent who said in June that they would support Obama.

The poll shows that while Obama has gained support from Clinton supporters-69 percent are in his favor. This has gained 9 percent since June.

Clinton’s supporters' views of John McCain have improved during this period.

Obama and Hilary compete

Hillary Clinton’s campaign strongly believes that the press had been kinder to Barack Obama than it has been to her.

Many of her supporters are up in arms about this.  I would say it’s definitely true that Obama has gotten better press than Clintons.

Still, I think Clinton supporters are going a bit overboard with this accusation.  On the other hand, if Obama lost eleven contests in a row, there would be no way he would still be a practical candidate.

Similarly, if Obama had reached a situation where no one can precisely figure out a way for Clinton to catch his lead without altering DNC rules, I doubt the race would still be considered a competition.
